The Great BC ShakeOut is the major event hosted by the British Columbia Earthquake Alliance (BCEA)

Our vision

Before an earthquake or tsunami:
British Columbians take active steps to ready themselves, their families, their businesses, and their communities for earthquakes.

We Unite

The British Columbia Earthquake Alliance unites leaders to strengthen earthquake and tsunami preparedness in BC

We Educate

We participate in a range of speaking engagements and educational events throughout the province as capacity permits

We Prepare

We expand and strengthen the culture of earthquake and tsunami preparedness in BC. We also reach out to underserved communities.

BritishColumbia is considered at high risk in relation to the rest of Canada. For example, on January 26, 1700, a magnitude 9 earthquake (similar to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake off the coast of Japan) shook the entire province as well as Washington, Oregon, and California, and generated a massive tsunami.

The Great British Columbia ShakeOut is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer during big earthquakes: “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” The ShakeOut has also been organized to encourage you, your community, your school, or your organization to review and update emergency preparedness plans.
